Celsius Energy Deploys Its Geoenergy Solution to Heat and Cool Giffard’s New Production Site in France

News Release

Celsius Energy is partnering with Giffard, a company specializing in liqueurs and syrups, to implement a shallow geothermal energy solution at its new industrial facility on the outskirts of Angers (49). As Giffard celebrates its 140th anniversary and continues its strong international growth, this technological choice aligns with its broader and ambitious sustainability strategy.

A Facility Dedicated to Producing Alcoholic and Non-Alcoholic Liqueurs

To support its expansion, address decarbonization challenges, and adapt its “artisan-industrial” processes while maintaining the highest quality standards, Giffard is investing €30 million in a new production site. Located in Saint-Léger-de-Linières, this 10,000 m² facility will be dedicated to producing both alcoholic and non-alcoholic liqueurs, a market that is increasingly popular, particularly in exports, which represent 70% of the company’s business across 90 countries.

“True to our roots and values, we continuously innovate to combine quality with environmental responsibility. Already committed to reducing our water consumption, reusing heat, and deploying solar panels, we are strengthening our approach with the integration of geothermal energy in our new production site. Choosing this local, efficient, and low-carbon solution was an obvious decision. The strong relationship with Celsius Energy, with whom we share the same vision, was a key factor in this choice,” states Pierre Jouanneau Giffard, Co-Director of Giffard.

A Building Fully Heated and Cooled Using the Earth’s Energy

Adjacent to the existing Syrups and Logistics site, which spans 4.5 hectares and includes a botanical garden, the new facility will benefit from Celsius Energy’s shallow geothermal solution, also known as geoenergy. This discreet and silent system will provide heating and cooling by exchanging heat and cold with the underground environment. The installation is designed to meet the facility’s specific needs, ensuring optimal comfort for employees while supporting industrial production processes, bottling, and storage.

As part of this sustainable approach, the company also plans to recover residual heat from production processes for additional heating when needed. Additionally, a new wastewater treatment station will be installed, incorporating a methanization process, which is an efficient and eco-friendly alternative to conventional treatment. This system will convert waste into biogas, which will then be used in production processes

An Optimized and Efficient System

Ultimately, the geoenergy solution will cover 97% of the facility’s heating needs and 91% of its cooling needs, resulting in a 73% reduction in energy consumption and nearly an 81% decrease in CO₂ emissions compared to a gas-powered system.
In practice, the underground environment will act as a thermal battery, generating 213 MWh of heat per year and 253 MWh of cooling per year through a closed-loop geothermal heat exchanger.

The system will be connected to the technical room housing the geothermal installations, including a connected heat pump. A digital platform will oversee the system’s performance, optimizing real-time energy use and minimizing electricity consumption by efficiently managing the underground energy source and the heat pump integrated into the building.

“For over 140 years, the family-owned Giffard company has combined artisanal expertise with innovation, always looking toward the future. By choosing geoenergy, it takes another major step in its environmental commitment. We are proud to support this ambition with a tailor-made solution, perfectly suited to the needs of its new production site. Together, we are proving that industrial excellence and environmental responsibility can go hand in hand!” states Cindy Demichel, CEO of Celsius Energy.

Construction of this second production site began in September 2023, with commissioning scheduled for the end of 2025.
