Background
The SLB Technology Center, which accomodates to 300 employees, aimed to replace the aging HVAC system (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) in a 4,500 m² mixed-use building, initially heated and cooled by gas boilers and chillers.
To highlight the many benefits of geoenergy, optimized by our innovations, this technology center has become the official demonstrator of the Celsius Energy solution in the United-Kingdom.
Need
The SLB Technology Center aimed to replace the aging HVAC system (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) in a 4,500 m² mixed-use building, initially heated and cooled by gas boilers and chillers.
The new solution needed to contribute to the Group’s ambition to reduce greenhouse gas emissions (carbon neutrality by 2050) and ensure energy savings in a context of rising energy costs. At the same time, it was essential to minimize the installation’s impact on site activities to ensure a smooth transition.
Solution
Celsius Energy proposed an innovative geoenergy solution to replace the gas boiler and chillers with a local, renewable energy source.
At the core of the system are 18 inclined, closed-loop wells connected to a ground source heat pump, controlled by an state-to-the-art digital platform. This platform optimizes energy performance in real-time, ensuring efficient and sustainable operation.
The wells, drilled in a “star” design from a single surface point, extend up to 200 meters deep. The result: a footprint reduced by 100 times and a minimized environmental impact.
Result
This installation provides 100% of the cooling needs and covers 84% of the heating needs, reducing CO₂ emissions by 87 tonnes per year from the first year. The goal? To achieve Net Zero by focusing on decarbonizing the electricity used.
With this solution, gas consumption is reduced by a factor of 7.6, and energy costs are lowered by £40,000 annually. The entire project was implemented swiftly in just 10 months with minimal disruption to site activities, made possible by the ingenious “star” design of the geothermal exchanger.
As of November 2024, this installation becomes the first demonstrator of Celsius Energy’s solution in the United Kingdom.
Our Group has committed to ambitious ESG goals among which making our operations as sustainable as possible is foremost. After careful consideration, geoenergy was by far the best option to ensure thermal comfort, drastically cut costs and significantly reduce emissions.
